Professional Spotlight – Dale Kolnitys
What is your current position and responsibilities?
Facility Coordinator at Oakland University Recreation and Well-Being. I am responsible for the day to day operation of the facility and fields as well as working with both internal and external groups for facility space.
How did you get involved with campus recreation?
I began as an intramural volleyball official. I had a lot of fun, worked with a great group of friends and learned a lot about the field from my coordinator. I officiated every sport, became a supervisor and realized the impact that recreation had on students. I wanted to be in a position that would allow me to impact students in the same way.
In your opinion, what is the value of campus recreation?
I value campus recreation extremely high because of the multidimensional impact that it has on campus. One major aspect is the out of classroom experience that it provides students, those opportunities to build skills and experiences are extremely important. Also just as important is the impact that is has on well-being and the campus community. For example the friendships that are formed and strengthened within all program areas are often some of the best experiences that people have while on campus.
What part of your job do you enjoy the most?
The day to day interaction with students and patrons. Having those opportunities to see the impact is the best part of the work that I do.
Who is your favorite sports team and why?
The Detroit Pistons have always been my favorite team largely because of the going to work era. There was just something special about the blue collar attitude of Rasheed, Chauncey and Ben Wallace.
