IIRSA State Conference – Recap

There were 115 attendees at the 2017 Illinois State Workshop held at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois.  The conference kicked off on Wednesday, October 25th with preconference activities, such as facility tours and a demonstration on ISU’s new high ropes course, which is 80% universally accessible to all populations!  That afternoon the keynote speaker, Diane Dahlmann, CEO of Company Dahlmann, took attendees through “Dahlmann’s Leisure Prescription,” and shared some personal insights on her experiences in collegiate recreation.  Throughout Thursday and Friday there were 19 presentations, round table discussions, and demonstrations that took place on some awesome topics, such as supporting student mental health in campus recreation, adaptive climbing, and diversity & identity in campus recreation.  IIRSA also hosted a Hoop Shoot and t-shirt exchange, along with their annual live and silent auctions, to raise over $3,000 toward student and professional scholarships!  The Thursday night workshop social took place at Swinger’s Grille, where attendees played trivia and used the driving range, and we announced our 2017 IIRSA Service Award Winner – Mark Glazier from University of Illinois at Chicago! Costs for the workshop were able to be kept low this year due to the recruitment of over $9,000 in vendor sponsorships!
