Hello NIRSA Students and Professionals,
We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the 30th Region III Student Lead On hosted by The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Please join us at the Recreation & Physical Activity Center from January 27-28, 2017.
Our planning committee is working hard to ensure that this event will be an extraordinary experience for you. This year’s conference promises to deliver an outstanding roster of pre-conference activities, education sessions, information sessions, social events, professional development and networking opportunities. Beyond the formal agenda, you will have many opportunities to learn from and share experiences with peers from a wide range of collegiate recreation programs within Region III. Perhaps you are exploring your interest in the field. Maybe you hope to attain a graduate assistantship or you are a professional staff member looking to pay your leadership knowledge forward. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, the Region III Student Lead On conference can help you “capitalize your potential” as we gather together in the capital city of Ohio.

About Region III Lead On
Region III Lead On is a student-led, student-run conference geared towards students and professionals within collegiate recreation. With the goal of fostering student opportunities for leadership, teamwork, networking and professional development; Region III Lead On is the premiere NIRSA regional conference and welcomes 500 students and professionals each year. Now in its 30th year, the conference features educational sessions, networking lunches and socials, teambuilding, facility tours, volunteer opportunities and much more over the three day event.

PAYMENTS
Payment via check, money order, or credit card (MasterCard, Visa or American Express) is acceptable. If paying by credit card, payment is due with the registration form. If paying by purchase order, indicate the purchase order number on your registration form to indicate a forthcoming check. A purchase order will be considered payment once received. No purchase orders will be accepted after December 16, 2016. If paying by check or money order, your check or money order must be postmarked by December 16, 2016. Checks and money orders must be payable to “Ohio Recreational Sports Association.” Checks and money orders should be mailed to: “Recreation & Physical Activity Center, C/O Brittany Crall, 337 Annie & John Glenn Ave., Columbus, OH 43210,” and foreign checks must be imprinted “US Funds.” You will be emailed a payment confirmation within 10 business days your registration receipt. If you do not receive an email, contact Brittany Crall at (614) 247-7632. An email address is required to receive a receipt/confirmation of registration.
REFUND POLICY FOR ALL CANCELLATIONS
Cancellation of registration for Region III Student Lead On and refund requests must be submitted via email to: Region III Student Lead On Cancellation, C/O Krista Bonikowske. Cancellations received on or before December 16, 2016 will receive a 100% refund. Refunds cannot be granted for cancellations received after December 16, 2016 or for no-shows at the event. Extenuating circumstances may warrant exceptions to the Refund Policy.
The Department of Recreational Sports at The Ohio State University is able to house 250 students for FREE overnight accommodations at the Recreation and Physical Activity Center (RPAC) on Thursday, January 26th and Friday, January 27th. The following facilities and amenities are available to our overnight guests:
- Breakfast on Friday, January 27th and Saturday, January 28th
- Individual shower and restroom stalls in the men’s and women’s locker rooms
- Private changing rooms
- Unlimited towel service
- Yoga mats for mattresses
- Coat check for personal belongings throughout the conference
Students staying overnight at the RPAC are encouraged to bring bedding (i.e. sheets, blankets, pillows, inflatable mattresses, etc.) and personal toiletry items. Curfew is set at 12 midnight for students staying overnight.
Please indicate on the registration form if you are planning to stay at the RPAC. If you would like to add or update the overnight stay information on your registration form, please email Krista Bonikowske. You will be required to fill out a liability waiver at the conference registration check in tables.

Visitor Parking Garages
Conference attendees planning to park their cars on campus are encouraged to park in either of the visitor parking garages listed below because of their close proximity to the Recreation and Physical Activity Center:
Tuttle Park Place Garage (daily rate $12.50, closest walk to the RPAC)
12th Avenue Garage (daily rate $11.25, slightly further walk to the RPAC)

RPAC Overnight Guests
Students staying overnight at the RPAC are encouraged to carpool so that can be environmentally and financially sustainable. If students are carpooling with professional staff members staying at an off-site hotel, they closest RPAC drop off point is at the corner of Tuttle Ave. and Annie & John Glenn Ave.
Conference Attendees Staying Off-Site
Shuttle services provided by the Lead On Host Committee will run from the RPAC to the Hampton Inn & Suites OSU/Fairfield Inn & Suites Columbus OSU on a continuous basis during the following times:
- Friday, January 27th 6:45am-8:45am
- Friday, January 27th 5pm-6:30pm
- Saturday, January 28th 6:45am-8:45am
- Saturday, January 28th from 12:30pm-2pm
Free onsite hotel parking is included for conference attendees staying at the Hampton Inn or Fairfield Inn. Conference attendees are welcome to park their personal vehicle on campus (visitor parking garage or surface lot) if they anticipate needing to travel outside of the shuttle times listed above or do not want to wait for the shuttle service.

This year’s all conference social and dinner will be held at the Ohio Statehouse in Capitol Square, Columbus. Completed in 1861, the Ohio Statehouse is rich in beauty, history and grandeur. The Statehouse maintains a historic character that continues to function as the center of state government in Ohio. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to “Capitalize Your Potential” with NIRSA colleagues at this social event! Comedian Josh Sneed will present a hilarious set for conference attendees – see his bio below!
Charter buses will depart from the conference hotels and RPAC starting at 6:30pm. Transportation to and from the social site will be available until 12:30am.
Comedian – Josh Sneed
“Out of college Josh went to work in his hometown of Cincinnati for Procter & Gamble as a Systems Analyst. After 3.5 years of doing a little bit of actual work and a lot of holding court at the water cooler, Josh decided to pursue his passion of standup comedy. His first time on stage was at his local club Go Bananas and he never looked back.
In 2004, Josh performed at the prestigious “Just For Laughs” Comedy Festival in Montreal and made his television debut on Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend”. In 2007, Josh was chosen by Comedy Central to perform in their inaugural South Beach Comedy Festival. Later that year, Josh filmed his 30- minute stand-up special, “Comedy Central Presents: Josh Sneed”. In 2008, Josh finished 2nd out of 100 of Comedy Central’s top comedians in the Annual Stand-up Showdown Competition, and released an album on Comedy Central Records called “Unacceptable”, which iTunes selected as one of the Top 10 comedy albums released. In 2009, Josh garnered praise from Punchline Magazine for his performance at the Aspen Comedy Festival. He is a favorite of the nationally syndicated “The Bob & Tom Show”, and receives regular airplay on Sirius/XM radio.
Josh is a headliner in standup comedy clubs around the country and has performed at numerous private and corporate events.
He currently resides in the Cincinnati area with his wife, son, and a pug named Jack.”
PRE CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES
Community Service Project – The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio
Thursday, January 26, 2:00 – 6:00 PM
Volunteer service to the organization could include furniture assembly, organization of the housewares department, and/or assisting with planning and execution of special events. Upon registering for participation in the pre-conference community service opportunity you will receive more information on exact details of our day as information become available.
About the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio
The mission of the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio is to provide furniture to central Ohio families and individuals struggling with poverty and other severe life challenges in an effort to relieve any suffering, strengthen family units, improve quality of life and build better community. The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio is a member of the Furniture Bank Association of North America, and operates as the second largest Furniture Bank in the country having earned numerous awards for programming- including the Columbus Foundation Award in 2013. The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio has served over 50,000 families- more than 154,000 people- in 16 years. In 2014, they served a record 4,549 families.
Ohio State Recreation Facilities Tour

With more than 650,000 square feet of recreation space, the Department of Recreational Sports at The Ohio State University houses an array of fitness equipment, indoor courts as well as a natatorium with competitive swimming and diving pools. Explore up to three recreation centers during this pre-conference event!
STUDENT ONLY OPPORTUNITY:
Building Community & Applying Leadership within Collegiate Recreation
Thursday, January 26th, 2:00 – 4:00 PM
Whether you are a first time Lead On attendee or a veteran of Region III Lead On, this pre-conference session is the perfect way for you to kick off 2016 Region III Lead On. Our region’s team of state and provincial student leaders facilitate intentional activities to introduce the concept of everyday leadership and allow session attendees to get acquainted with each other!
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
Session Monitor: Start an educational session off on the right foot! Session monitors will be asked to introduce the presenters, distribute evaluations, and assist the presenter as necessary.
Professional Development/Career Opportunity Center (COC): Help your fellow conference attendees capitalize their potential in the COC by manning an information table, delivering critiqued resumes, and answering questions about information sessions.
Social Volunteer: Assist during the informal and formal conference socials by greeting attendees, aiding coat-check, and general needs of running successful social events!
Registration Volunteer: Assist on either Thursday, January 26th or Friday, January 27th with the check-in of conference attendees. This volunteer position may require early arrival on Thursday. Registration volunteers will greet attendees, deliver conference materials, and provide general conference information.
**Students and professionals assisting as a Session Monitor, COC, or Social Volunteer will be asked to attend a volunteer meeting at 8am on Friday, January 27th. Registration Volunteers will not have to attend the volunteer meeting due to conflicting conference timing.
PROFESSIONAL ONLY OPPORTUNITIES:
Mock Interviewer: Pairs you with a student who would like to polish their 1-on-1 interviewing skills. The professional staff member will provide feedback and contact information for the student to follow up for any further questions.
Resume Critic: As a professional you will be paired one on one for a formal resume critique with a student attendee. Help the future of collegiate recreation stand apart from other applicants.
**Professionals participating in mock interviews or resume critiques are not required to attend a volunteer meeting as more information will be communicated via email.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Mock Interviews: Pairs students and professional staff to polish students’ 1-on-1 interviewing skills. The professional staff member will provide feedback and contact information for the student to follow up for any further questions.
Resume Critique: Pairs students and professional staff for a formal meeting to review all parts of the student’s resume.
Mentor/Mentee program: Pairs undergraduate students with graduate students in an informal setting to allow information sharing about professional development opportunities and graduate assistantships.
Conference Challenge: All student attendees are welcome to participate in this year’s conference challenge. This year, we’ve combined the best of all our previous challenges to come up with one that incorporates involvement at every level within the conference. Earn points for attending the pre-conference events, participating in the COC, volunteering during the conference, networking with other attendees, and being involved on social media!
